Enugu State Resident Doctors Issue Ultimatum for More Doctors and Improved Security

Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital (ESUTH) is facing a critical staffing shortage, prompting the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) to issue a 14-day ultimatum to the Enugu State Government. The doctors are demanding the immediate employment of additional doctors and improved security measures within the hospital.

During an Emergency General Meeting held on Friday, November 17, 2023, the ARD-ESUT released a communique highlighting the urgent need for action. The statement, jointly signed by the President of ARD-ESUT, Dr Chukwunonso Ofonere, and its Secretary General, Dr Ikemefuna Nnamani, called for a state of emergency to be declared regarding the employment of doctors in the hospital.

According to the ARD-ESUT, it has been 120 days since the government promised to employ medical officers and resident doctors, but no steps have been taken to fulfill this commitment. The doctors are now demanding that the management of ESUTH Teaching Hospital and the Enugu State Government act swiftly to recruit doctors across various departments, especially in the Accident and Emergency, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology departments.

The ARD-ESUT also expressed concerns over the safety of doctors and other healthcare workers within the hospital. While the management has assured them of implementing safety policies, the doctors require swift action to protect against physical attacks and kidnapping. The Chief Medical Director (CMD) has promised to take necessary measures within a week.

Furthermore, the ARD-ESUT is demanding the immediate implementation of the 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) to ensure parity with other states. They have provided a list of eligible doctors and the associated financial implications to support their request.

In light of these demands, the ARD-ESUT has extended their initial 14-day ultimatum by an additional 14 days, set to end on December 1. The association has made it clear that failure to meet their demands could result in a disruption of services.

The staffing crisis at ESUTH Teaching Hospital is a pressing issue that requires urgent attention. The shortage of doctors, coupled with concerns about the safety of healthcare workers, undermines the quality and accessibility of medical care in Enugu State. The government must act swiftly to address these concerns, not only for the welfare of doctors but also for the well-being of patients who rely on their expertise and dedication.

Efforts to recruit more doctors and enhance security must be prioritized to ensure that ESUTH Teaching Hospital can deliver the highest standard of care to the people of Enugu State. The ARD-ESUT has taken a stand, and now it is up to the hospital management and the Enugu State Government to respond promptly and effectively. The time for action is now, and the health and safety of both doctors and patients depend on it.
