MELBOURNE, Fla. – A new species has found its home at the Brevard Zoo in Melbourne. George, a one-and-a-half-year-old okapi, recently arrived at the facility and will soon join the animals in the Expedition Africa area. The addition of George is part of the zoo’s efforts to protect genetically diverse animal populations through the Species Survival Plan within the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Originating from the rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo, okapi are endangered due to hunting and habitat loss caused by mineral mining for electronic devices. Often referred to as forest giraffes, okapi have unique legs resembling zebras but belong to the Giraffidae family. Their existence was once considered a myth until the 20th century.

While George settles into his new surroundings, the Brevard Zoo has launched the Eco-Cell program, encouraging visitors to recycle their old electronics. A drop-off box is conveniently located near the zoo ticket booth, accepting a wide range of devices, including cell phones, smartphones, iPads, iPods, tablets, smartwatches, and digital cameras.

The zoo plans to announce on social media when George is ready to meet the public. This exciting addition provides an opportunity for visitors to learn more about okapi and their conservation needs. By raising awareness and incorporating preservation programs like the Species Survival Plan, the Brevard Zoo aims to contribute to the protection and future of these incredible creatures.

As animal lovers, let’s embrace our responsibility to safeguard endangered species and support initiatives that promote their welfare and well-being. Together, we can make a difference and ensure a brighter future for all Earth’s inhabitants.
