An encounter between security forces and Naxals took place in the Kanker district of Chhattisgarh on Monday. According to reports, a joint operation was launched by District Reserve Guard (DRG) Kanker and 132 Battalion BSF troops in the Amatola, Binagunda, Kalper areas, across Kotri river in Kanker district. The exchange of fire took place between Kanker DRG and Naxals near the Binagunda jungle area around 7 am on Monday. As a result, the body of a uniformed unidentified woman Naxalite with a .303 rifle was recovered from the site of the encounter.
The senior police official stated that security forces are currently carrying out search operations. An encounter between Naxals and security personnel had also taken place the previous week in a jungle of the Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh. The joint operation against the Naxals was carried out by Central Reserve Police Force’s jungle warfare unit CoBRA and Chhattisgarh Special Task Force.
There have been several encounters between the security forces and Naxals in Chhattisgarh in the past few months. In April, 22 security personnel were killed and 31 were injured in a deadly encounter with Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district. The encounter had lasted for four hours. Since then, security has been significantly tightened in the area to prevent further such attacks.
Naxals are a group of armed revolutionaries who seek the overthrow of the Indian government and socioeconomic reforms through violent means. The government has been engaging in talks with the Naxals to bring them to the mainstream and resolve the underlying issues that give rise to their violent activities. However, despite several rounds of talks, the Naxals have continued to carry out violent attacks in several parts of the country.
