Electric Ford F-150’s Range Decreases by 25% with Full Payload, Study by AAA Indicates, Gas Version Outperforms with Additional 200 Miles

The F-150 Lightning, the electric version of Ford’s popular pickup truck, has experienced a significant reduction in driving range when fully loaded, according to a recent study by AAA. The study found that with a payload of 1,400 pounds, the truck’s range dropped from 278 miles to 210 miles, resulting in a 24.5% decrease in range.

The version of the F-150 Lightning used in the test was rated with a 300-mile range, which means that owners could potentially lose up to 90 miles of range when towing a trailer or carrying a heavy load. It’s important to note that the truck was loaded to near its maximum capacity during the test.

The range of the F-150 Lightning falls significantly short of its gas-powered counterpart, which can drive for 500 miles on a full tank. This disparity in range raises concerns about the practicality and usability of electric pickup trucks, especially for those who rely on their vehicles for long drives or heavy-duty tasks.

According to AAA, the model used in the test was just 110 pounds shy of its maximum payload capacity. Ford lists the Lightning’s maximum payload as 2,235 pounds with the standard battery and 1,952 pounds with the extended-range battery. These models could potentially experience an even greater reduction in range if loaded to their full capacity.

Furthermore, AAA warned that even without additional cargo, permanent loads such as equipment racks, toolboxes, and equipment trays built into the vehicle can also reduce the truck’s range. This means that professional users and workers who frequently carry equipment and supplies may face ongoing range limitations.

The disappointing news regarding the F-150 Lightning comes on the heels of a significant price increase for the electric vehicle. The original announcement in 2021 stated a starting price of $39,975, but customers who had reserved the trucks were met with a drastic price hike to $59,974 in 2023.

The sudden price increase, combined with the reduced range when fully loaded, has led to a decline in buyer confidence. Some potential customers have expressed frustration and disappointment, citing canceled reservations due to the price hike and concerns about the truck’s performance in cold weather.

Dealerships are also feeling the impact of the increased prices. One Ford dealership sales manager reported that many customers have canceled their reservations, as the price jump from $40,000 to $60,000, and even higher, has caught them off guard. The manager mentioned that customers now have to pay a minimum of $65,000 to secure a truck, which significantly changes the buying proposition.

As the F-150 Lightning continues to face challenges concerning range and pricing, it remains to be seen how it will fare in the competitive electric pickup truck market. While the Lightning offers impressive features and the allure of an electric powertrain, these recent developments have raised concerns about its overall appeal and practicality for potential buyers.

It is important for consumers to carefully consider their needs and priorities before committing to an electric pickup truck, as the range reduction and increased costs may impact their ability to use the vehicle to its fullest potential. As the electric vehicle market evolves, automakers will need to address these issues to ensure that electric pickup trucks can truly compete with their gas-powered counterparts in terms of range and affordability.
