Educational Institutes Help Promote Equality: President Murmu

President Ram Nath Kovind recently addressed the closing ceremony of the two-day visitor’s conference held at Rashtrapati Bhawan. The conference, which focused on Education for Sustainable Development: Building a better world, was attended by more than 150 heads of educational institutions, including central universities, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), and National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research.

President Kovind emphasized the relevance of the conference’s themes to both India and the world. The session on diversity, equality, inclusivity, and wellness, which was headed by V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras, discussed the efforts made by educational institutions in these areas. These efforts included reducing gender bias, facilitating the ease of living for physically challenged individuals, and promoting the participation of women in leadership roles. The discussions led to a wide range of suggestions on ensuring the happiness, well-being, and development of students and faculty.

During her inaugural address, President Kovind expressed concerns about the rising number of suicides among students at IITs and urged educational institutions to prioritize the protection and support of their students against stress, humiliation, and neglect on campuses. She also highlighted the importance of innovation and cutting-edge research for the economic and social development of a nation. President Kovind expressed confidence in the potential of higher education institutions in India to become powerhouses of research and innovation.

The conference also discussed the need for high-quality education and teaching. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized the positive impact of mental and emotional well-being on students’ motivation, focus, and resilience. He stressed the importance of promoting well-being to provide students with the tools and resources they need to thrive both on campus and in life.

The conference also tackled the topic of internationalization in education. While many institutions have taken steps towards this goal, it was discussed that there is a need to enhance academic collaboration with top universities around the world and attract more foreign students to study in India.

The conference concluded with plans to create programs that bridge the gap between arts and sciences. This will be achieved by promoting conceptual understanding and encouraging multilingualism in teaching and learning through the use of technology.

President Kovind expressed her confidence that higher education institutions in India can become global education centers, attracting students from around the world. Additionally, she emphasized the need to maintain a balance in education and present a comprehensive view of the topic.

In conclusion, the conference organized by President Kovind shed light on the crucial role educational institutions play in promoting equality, diversity, inclusivity, and wellness. The discussions and suggestions made during the conference will shape the future of education in India, placing a strong emphasis on research, innovation, and the overall well-being of students. With these efforts, India’s higher education institutions have the potential to become global leaders in knowledge creation and attract students from all corners of the world.
