An Edmonton man is lucky to be alive after being stabbed on New Year’s Eve in a random attack. Curtis Lizotte, 53, was walking home from a nearby store when a man approached him and asked for a lighter. When Lizotte said he didn’t have one, the attacker pulled out a machete and stabbed him in the abdomen. The suspect then fled the scene without any motive apparent. Lizotte managed to make it home, where he asked his wife to call 911. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery to repair the stab wound, which narrowly missed a major artery and his spine. Lizotte’s daughter, Nicole, expressed gratitude that her father survived the attack. Another stabbing occurred 20 minutes later at the Kingsway Transit Centre, with police suspecting the same perpetrator. The victim, a 45-year-old man, was taken to the hospital in critical condition as well. The Edmonton Police Service is continuing to search for the suspect and urges anyone with information to come forward. Nicole Lizotte hopes that the perpetrator can be found quickly to prevent further harm to innocent victims.
