Edmonton Man Arrested for Sexual Assaults on Homeless Women; Police Concerned about More Victims

Edmonton, Canada – A 60-year-old Edmonton man has been arrested and charged in connection with two cases of sexual assault against homeless women. The Edmonton police believe that there may be more victims involved and are urging them to come forward.

The investigation began in January 2023 after authorities received a report about a man approaching women near homeless shelters. The man would allegedly bring them back to his home, confine them, and then sexually assault them. Two incidents, one in July 2015 and another in December 2022, have been identified so far.

The suspect, Donald Burnett, was identified by investigators, who then issued a warning to local shelters. On May 10, Burnett was taken into custody and charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of forcible confinement.

However, concerns have been raised after Burnett was released on July 19 on several conditions. He is not allowed to go to specific shelters and must not have any females other than his sureties in his home or vehicle. Additionally, Burnett has a curfew between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The police are now warning the community about Burnett, describing him as a predator. Sergeant Harry Grewal of the EPS sexual assault section expressed his concern and condemned Burnett’s actions, stating, I think that’s the definition of a predator.

Described as a white male, 5’6 tall, weighing approximately 230 lb, with brown hair and blue eyes, Burnett drives a silver 2008 Dodge Caravan. He is also known to go by the names Don or Donald Davidson.

Authorities have not released a photo of Burnett to avoid jeopardizing the ongoing investigation. However, staff at local social agencies and shelters are familiar with him and his appearance.

Nivedita Kunjur, a spokesperson for the Bissell Centre, stressed the importance of housing in light of the situation. Imagine living in perpetual fear for the safety of your life. It’s inhumane, no one deserves to live like that, and you know housing is not a luxury, it is something that is absolutely critical, Kunjur stated.

Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of Burnett’s crimes is urged to contact the Edmonton police or Crime Stoppers. The police can be reached at 780-423-4567.

Authorities hope that by publicizing this case, more victims will come forward, leading to additional evidence and potentially preventing future incidents. They are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community and providing justice for the victims.
