ED raids 2 ex-Punjab ministers; seizes documents, mobile phones

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has conducted raids on two former Punjab forest ministers, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot and Sangat Singh Giljian, both Congress leaders, as part of an alleged forest scam-linked money laundering probe. In a statement issued on Friday, the federal probe agency revealed that the investigation revolves around charges of bribery in the state forest department, including the issuance of permits for tree felling and transfers/postings within the department.

The raids, which took place on November 30 in Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, targeted the residential premises of Dharamsot, Giljian, their associates, forest officers, and private individuals. Dharamsot, a five-time MLA, was previously arrested by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau this year on charges related to alleged possession of disproportionate assets. Meanwhile, Giljian served as an MLA from the Urmar seat in Hoshiarpur district.

The money laundering case was filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and stems from an FIR lodged by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau. The initial report highlights alleged irregularities in the forest department, including claims of bribery involving the ministers and department officers pertaining to permits for felling Khair trees, transfers/postings within the department, issuance of NOC (No Objection Certificate), and the purchase of tree guards.

During the search operations, the ED seized various incriminating documents, mobile phones, and digital devices. These materials are believed to reveal suspicious transactions involving individuals under investigation. The evidentiary findings will likely contribute to the ongoing probe.

The raids against the former Punjab ministers have caused a stir in the political landscape. As news of the ongoing investigation spreads, questions arise about the role of forest officials and possible corruption within the higher ranks of the state administration. The allegations of bribery and malpractice in the forest department have raised concerns among the public, who demand transparency and accountability.

As the probe progresses, it is crucial for the ED to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, ensuring that all relevant facts are uncovered. This process should include interviews and statements from the individuals involved to shed light on the alleged wrongdoings. The evidence seized by the ED will play a crucial role in building a strong case against those accused of bribery and other offenses.

The outcome of this investigation will not only impact the individuals involved but also the public’s perception of the political landscape in Punjab. As citizens await further developments, it is imperative for the authorities to address these allegations promptly and ensure justice is served. The fight against corruption requires a clear message that those in positions of power will be held accountable for their actions.

The focus on transparency and ethical conduct within the political sphere is paramount to building trust among citizens. The communities affected by these alleged misdeeds yearn for leadership that upholds moral values and works toward the betterment of society. The ED’s investigations, coupled with an impartial legal process, could bring about much-needed change and put an end to corrupt practices that hinder progress and development.

As the situation unfolds, it is crucial to monitor the progress of the probe and its impact on the political landscape in Punjab. The outcome of this investigation will serve as a testament to the commitment to combating corruption and establishing a more accountable governance structure.
