Living near green spaces linked to stronger bones in young children

In a recent study published in JAMA Network Open, researchers have found a positive association between early-life exposure to residential green spaces and changes in bone mineral density in young children. The study aimed to understand how exposure to green spaces in early life can influence bone mass accrual and its long-term effects on preventing osteoporosis and fractures.

The study, part of the Environmental Influence on Aging in Early Life (ENVIRONAGE) birth cohort in Belgium, analyzed data from 327 children aged four to six. The study collected information through questionnaires covering lifestyle, sociodemographic, and health details, and used quantitative ultrasonography to assess bone mineral density. The green space exposure around each child’s residence was calculated using high-resolution land cover data.

The results of the study showed that residential green space exposure was positively linked to bone mineral density in young children. The strongest connection was observed with total green space within a 500-meter radius, where a 21.2% increase in green space was associated with a 27.38 m/s increase in bone mineral density. The risk of having low bone mineral density was also found to be lower with increased green space exposure.

The study findings contribute to the growing body of evidence on the various benefits of green space exposure for children. Previous research has linked green space exposure to neurocognitive, mental, social-behavioral, and emotional benefits, as well as lower obesity risk, reduced blood pressure, and increased physical activity.

However, further research is still needed to fully understand the mechanisms behind these associations and to explore the optimal level and type of green space exposure for maximum bone health benefits.

The results of this study highlight the importance of access to green spaces for young children’s bone development and overall health. Creating and maintaining green spaces in urban areas could potentially have a significant impact on promoting healthy bone development, reducing the risk of osteoporosis, and improving the overall well-being of children.

It is important for parents, policymakers, and urban planners to consider the incorporation of green spaces in residential areas to provide opportunities for children to engage in outdoor activities and enjoy the benefits of nature. By prioritizing the availability of green spaces, we can contribute to healthier and stronger bones in the next generation.

This research opens up new avenues for future studies and reinforces the understanding of the multi-faceted benefits of green spaces for children’s health. As we continue to navigate an increasingly urbanized world, it is crucial to prioritize the integration of green spaces into the urban landscape to support the health and well-being of our youngest generation.
