Early Detection of Deadly Heart Condition Now Possible

A groundbreaking study led by researchers at University College London (UCL) has uncovered a new way to detect and diagnose a potentially deadly heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) before symptoms become apparent. By combining two advanced heart scan techniques, doctors may be able to identify individuals at risk much earlier, leading to timely treatment and potentially saving lives.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a genetic condition that affects approximately 1 in 500 people in the UK. It causes the walls of the heart to become abnormally thick, impairing its ability to pump blood effectively. This condition is a leading cause of heart failure and sudden cardiac death.

In this study, researchers from UCL, Barts Heart Centre, and the University of Leeds examined the hearts of three groups of individuals: a healthy group, a group with diagnosed HCM, and a group carrying the gene that causes HCM but showing no visible signs of the disease. The researchers utilized two cutting-edge heart scanning techniques to analyze the hearts: cardiac diffusion tensor imaging (cDTI) and cardiac MRI perfusion (perfusion CMR).

The findings revealed that individuals with HCM exhibited disorganized heart muscle cells and significant issues with the small blood vessels that supply the heart muscle. Intriguingly, similar problems were spotted in individuals who carried the HCM-causing gene but were asymptomatic and did not show any thickening of the heart muscle. These results could help doctors more accurately identify early signs of HCM.

The discovery of this potential early detection method comes at a crucial time, as there are now new treatments available for HCM. Mavacamten, a recently approved drug in Europe, can slow down the progression of the disease once symptoms arise. Additionally, pioneering gene therapies are being developed that could potentially prevent symptoms altogether.

Perfusion CMR is already being utilized in some clinics to distinguish HCM from other causes of muscle thickening. When combined with the cDTI and perfusion CMR scans, doctors are now better equipped than ever to identify individuals at risk of HCM earlier, enabling preventive measures and early intervention.

Dr. George Joy, who spearheaded the study alongside Professor James Moon and Dr. Luis Lopes, believes that early detection could be vital for clinical trials testing treatments aimed at preventing the disease’s progression or correcting genetic mutations. Dr. Lopes, the senior author of the study, indicates that the findings provide a deeper understanding of the early manifestations of HCM, equipping doctors with additional clinical tools for screening, monitoring, and making informed therapeutic decisions.
