External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. The discussion primarily focused on bilateral economic issues and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the ASEAN-India Ministerial.

In a tweet, Jaishankar said, Met with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia in Jakarta today. Discussed bilateral economic issues, as also matters pertaining to the Ukraine conflict. This is not the first time the two ministers have met, as they previously interacted during the BRICS summit held in South Africa in June.

Despite growing Western concerns about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, India has emerged as a key importer of discounted crude oil from Russia in recent months. The economic engagement between India and Russia has significantly increased, largely attributed to India’s purchase of discounted Russian oil.

However, it is worth noting that India has not openly condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Instead, India has been advocating for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.

The meeting between Jaishankar and Lavrov highlights the growing economic ties between India and Russia. Their discussions on bilateral economic issues indicate a continued commitment to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries. Moreover, the fact that the meeting took place in Indonesia, on the sidelines of the ASEAN-India Ministerial, demonstrates the importance of regional partnerships and India’s active involvement in the ASEAN region.

India’s strategic relationship with Russia has long been a cornerstone of its foreign policy. Both countries have traditionally enjoyed close ties, with a strong focus on defense cooperation, trade, and energy. The recent increase in economic engagement further solidifies this relationship and signifies India’s desire to diversify its energy sources.

By maintaining economic ties with Russia despite international disapproval, India is positioning itself as a pragmatic and independent actor on the global stage. While the Ukraine conflict remains a sensitive issue, India’s emphasis on dialogue and diplomacy demonstrates its commitment to peaceful resolution.

In conclusion, the meeting between Jaishankar and Lavrov in Jakarta highlights the strengthening economic ties between India and Russia. The discussions on bilateral economic issues and the Ukraine conflict emphasize India’s commitment to maintaining its strategic relationship with Russia while seeking peaceful solutions through dialogue. This meeting demonstrates India’s active participation in regional partnerships, particularly in the ASEAN region. Despite growing concerns from the West, India’s engagement with Russia signifies its pragmatic approach and desire for energy diversification.
