Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning director and writer, has pleaded not guilty to assaulting a woman at a London nightclub. Black, who is married to Olympic champion diver Tom Daley, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court for the trial. He is accused of assaulting Terry Edwardes by beating on August 18, 2020. The alleged incident occurred at a Soho hotspot where Black is said to have thrown a drink over BBC Three host and events promoter Edwardes. Black, 48, denied the allegation during his previous court appearance in April. He has been released on unconditional bail.

Black’s representative expressed his surprise and sadness regarding the matter, emphasizing that after the other person involved had taken responsibility and expressed remorse for assaulting Black, it was unexpected to see the spilled drink incident being examined in a court of law. The representative stated that Black would respect the legal process and continue to focus on his family.

According to reports, Black had called the police after an altercation with Edwardes at a venue called Freedom, where he was on a date with his husband. Edwardes, known as the founder of Lick events and a BBC show personality, claimed that Black threw a drink at her and her response was a little tap on the head. However, Black referred to the incident as a targeted attack and contacted the authorities.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that they were called to the premises on Wardour Street early on August 18, 2020, following reports of an altercation between two customers. Both Black and Edwardes made allegations of common assault. No injuries were reported, and no arrests were made at the time. The police stated that investigations are ongoing.
