US-based language learning app Duolingo has reportedly laid off 10% of its contract translators as the company increases its reliance on generative artificial intelligence (AI) to develop its content. While Duolingo stated that the use of AI is only one factor contributing to the reduction of its contract workforce, it acknowledged that AI is being employed to aid in tasks such as generating sentences and acceptable translations. The company emphasized that both contract and staff employees are still involved in reviewing AI outputs for accuracy. Duolingo also mentioned its plans to hire two new AI positions to help personalize the tool and refine its speech. The language learning app has experienced significant growth, with over 23 billion lessons completed in 2023, and more than 8.4 million learners actively studying Hindi on the platform. The Duolingo Language Report 2023 revealed that nearly 1.5 billion hours were spent learning on the app, and over 32 million people studied multiple languages last year. Duolingo intends for AI to save translators time and allow them to focus on more complex tasks.
