Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) is back with its Dubai Public Library Summer Camp, a four-week program aimed at children aged 8-13. Held under the theme of Sustainability, the camp aims to provide quality experiences and creative workshops to the participants. Divided into two periods, the first one will take place from July 17 to July 30, 2023, followed by the second period from August 7 to August 20.
The camp will focus on teaching children various recycling methods and educating them on how to plan and build sustainable cities. It will also teach them to adapt to the climate, find ways to conserve water in Dubai, explore urban green spaces and biodiversity, and promote environmentally friendly transportation in the emirate. The participants will have the opportunity to learn and engage in activities such as decoupage and sculpture, cast painting, textile art, soap making, pottery, fabric coloring, and creating sustainable bags. They will also learn how to make animal figures and musical instruments using recycled materials, as well as design aeroplanes. The camp will utilize multimedia tools and cover topics like the wonders of origami, sustainable waste management, and the possibilities of turning waste into art.
Abdul Rahman Younis, the Acting Director of the Public Libraries Department at Dubai Culture, emphasized the importance of summer camps in the development of children’s abilities and their sense of responsibility. He also highlighted the role of such camps in instilling the concept of sustainability in their daily lives. Younis mentioned that Dubai Culture is keen to align the camp’s activities with the Year of Sustainability and shed light on the UAE’s heritage in this regard. The goal is to motivate children to come up with innovative solutions that contribute to maintaining a sustainable environment, promote the use of recycled materials, and learn about Dubai’s achievements in sustainability.
The camp’s workshops and activities have been professionally designed to combine art, entertainment, and learning. The aim is to create a creative and cultural environment that encourages the discovery of talent, enhances communication skills, promotes positive thinking and teamwork, and fosters a strong bond with reading. Dubai Culture aims to inspire future generations and actively involve them in the cultural movement in Dubai and the UAE.
During the camp, Dubai Culture will also organize the Second-Hand Book Fair at Al Twar Library from July 17 to August 20. The fair aims to enhance children’s cognitive awareness and encourage them to cultivate a habit of reading as a way of life. Dubai Culture will offer a wide range of quality books at affordable prices, ranging from AED 3 to 10.
