Bike taxi drivers in Delhi have requested the intervention of Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena to prevent a ban on their services. The Delhi government recently prohibited app-based taxi services like Rapido and Uber from operating in the city because of a lack of regulations governing the use of bike taxis. The drivers maintain that the ban will have a significant impact on their livelihoods, making it difficult to care for their families, educate their children, and care for their parents. A Supreme Court decision has temporarily halted the Delhi High Court’s order permitting Rapido and Uber to continue operating, though appeals for an urgent hearing will be made. The Transport Commissioner announced that the companies will be contacted and reminded to comply with the Supreme Court’s order or face legal consequences. The Delhi government has pledged to finalize policies for bike taxis in the city before the end of July.
