Two Men Charged in Drive-By Shooting That Took One Life and Injured Four Others in Chicago’s West Side

Chicago, Illinois – Two men have been arrested and charged in connection with a tragic drive-by shooting that occurred last month on the West Side of Chicago. The incident resulted in the death of a woman and left four others injured. Manuel Bahamon, 22, and Ismael Lozada, 23, now face charges including first-degree murder and four counts of first-degree attempted murder, according to the Chicago Police Department.

The shooting, which took place in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on July 16, claimed the life of 40-year-old Ashley Griggs, a resident of Chicago and the mother of Carnell Tate, a football player at Ohio State University. The senseless act of violence has not only devastated the victim’s family but also shocked and saddened the local community.

Upon receiving a report of a person shot in the early hours of the morning, law enforcement officers swiftly responded to the scene in the 4000-block of West Washington Street. Tragically, they found Ashley Griggs with multiple gunshot wounds. She was rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

In addition to the loss of Ashley Griggs’ life, four other individuals were injured during the shooting. A 38-year-old woman was struck in the buttocks and transported to Stroger Hospital in fair condition. Another victim, a 39-year-old man, was struck in the arm and also taken to Stroger Hospital, where he remains in fair condition. Additionally, a 38-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh and was transported to Stroger Hospital in fair condition, while a 42-year-old man sustained injuries to his leg and foot and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where his condition is deemed fair.

The arrest and subsequent charging of these two individuals provide a ray of hope for justice and closure to the victims’ families. It is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the Chicago Police Department in swiftly apprehending suspects involved in such heinous crimes.

While authorities believe Bahamon and Lozada to be responsible for this specific incident, gun violence on the streets of Chicago remains a persistent issue. The city has been grappling with an alarming increase in gun-related crimes, causing concern among local residents and officials. The tragic consequences of these incidents only serve to highlight the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the root causes of gun violence and ensure the safety of Chicago’s communities.

As investigations continue, the Chicago community unites in grief and supports the affected families during this difficult time. The loss of Ashley Griggs serves as a painful reminder of the devastating consequences of senseless violence, and it is incumbent upon authorities and society as a whole to work towards making Chicago and other cities safer for everyone.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of Ashley Griggs, as well as those who were injured in this appalling incident. It is our hope that justice will be served, and steps will be taken to prevent such tragedies from recurring in the future.
