CBP Investigation Underway as Dried Seahorses, Dead Snakes, and Prohibited Pork Seized at Washington Dulles Airport
In a recent incident at Washington Dulles International Airport, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents made an alarming seizure that involved dried seahorses, dead snakes, snail ointment, and prohibited pork items. Two travelers arriving from Vietnam were involved in these two separate incidents that took place in August.
The first traveler, who was headed to Fairfax, Virginia, was directed to undergo a secondary baggage examination. During the inspection, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) inspectors discovered a collection of bizarre items. Importing seahorses, snakes, and snail ointment without the necessary permits or documentation violates several laws and regulations, including provisions of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), as well as the Lacey Act, according to CBP.
Another incident occurred a few days later when the second traveler, bound for San Francisco, arrived at Dulles. Once again, a secondary inspection led to the discovery of prohibited items. This time, USFWS wildlife inspectors seized four prohibited pork products and 50 small boxes of a commercial herbal liquid medicine that listed snake oil as one of its ingredients.
CBP highlighted that the U.S. Department of Agriculture strictly prohibits uncertified pork products from entering the country due to the potential risk of introducing dangerous diseases like African swine fever and swine vesicular disease.
Christine Waugh, CBP’s acting area port director for the area port of Washington, D.C., stressed that while some animal-based products may be considered normal in other parts of the world, it is crucial for travelers visiting the United States to understand that Customs and Border Protection is dedicated to safeguarding the nation’s agricultural industries and enforcing wildlife and import laws. Failure to comply can result in the seizure of illegal or prohibited products, with CBP agriculture specialists working alongside their USFWS counterparts to educate travelers and hold them accountable.
All confiscated prohibited products were seized by CBP agriculture specialists and handed over to USFWS inspectors. The ongoing investigation by the USFWS aims to shed light on the origins and purpose of these illegal imports.
As incidents like these raise concerns about potential risks to agriculture and wildlife, authorities stress the importance of maintaining vigilance at airports and other points of entry.
