The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully dismantled two criminal networks involved in the illegal smuggling of areca nuts worth ₹4.43 crore in Mumbai. In separate operations, the DRI arrested five operatives and seized 50 metric tonnes of smuggled areca nuts.
Dubai, UAE was the source of the smuggled goods, which were concealed within two different cargos of quick lime lumps and gypsum powder. The accused individuals had hidden the undeclared areca nuts in containers that held declared cargo. However, during the container’s transportation from the port to the Container Freight Station (CFS), the illicit goods were allegedly replaced.
The first intercepted container had originated from Dubai and was declared as containing Quick Lime Lumps. A thorough examination of the container led to the discovery of approximately 25.9 metric tonnes of areca nuts, with an estimated value of ₹2.23 crore. These smuggled goods were seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
In the second case, another 40-foot container from Dubai involved a fraudulent declaration of gypsum powder as the import cargo. Further inspection revealed the entire shipment had been mis-declared, and instead, it contained areca nuts in whole form, packed in jute gunny bags. The weight of the smuggled areca nuts in this instance was approximately 25.8 metric tonnes, valued at ₹2.2 crore. These goods were also seized in accordance with the Customs Act 1962.
Investigation into the matter led to the arrest of two individuals, including the importer-exporter code (IEC) holder of the first case. It was also discovered that other containers had been involved in similar acts of smuggling, with the smuggled areca nuts being replaced with the cover cargo during transportation from the port to the CFS. Following leads obtained during the interrogation of the arrested individuals, three more suspects were apprehended, providing crucial information regarding the modus operandi of the areca nut smuggling network.
The DRI’s actions have exposed a significant network involved in the illegal smuggling of areca nuts. The agency’s efforts not only led to the arrests of several key operatives but also resulted in the seizure of a considerable amount of smuggled goods.
