Dr. Mohamed Muizzu Emerges Victorious in Maldives Presidential Election
Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of the opposition PPM PNC coalition has emerged as the winner of the Presidential elections in Maldives. With over 53 percent of the votes in the provisional results, Dr. Muizzu secured a clear majority, surpassing the required 50 percent threshold for victory.
The provisional results, which were tallied by various media outlets in Maldives, confirmed Dr. Muizzu’s lead in the popular vote. Despite an increased support of 46 percent in the runoff, Ibrahim Mohammed Solih of the ruling MDP fell short of the necessary majority to secure another term as President.
Dr. Muizzu, expressing his gratitude to the Maldivian people for their trust, thanked all those who cast their votes in his favor. In a gesture of reconciliation, he called for the release of Abdulla Yameen, who is currently serving an 11-year sentence on corruption charges. Mr. Solih, on the other hand, congratulated Dr. Muizzu and appreciated the democratic example set by the Maldivian people in these elections. Notably, Mr. Solih had won the previous election in 2018 by a significant margin, primarily driven by public dissatisfaction with human rights violations and corruption under his predecessor.

The polling took place yesterday at more than 570 polling stations from 8 am to 5 pm local time. The second round witnessed an improved turnout, with 86 percent of eligible voters exercising their right, compared to 78 percent in the first round.
