Dr. Henry Kissinger, Respected American Statesman and Scholar, Dies at Age 100
Dr. Henry Kissinger, a renowned American scholar and statesman, passed away today at his home in Connecticut. Born in southern Germany in 1923, Dr. Kissinger and his family fled Nazi Germany and arrived in America in 1938. After becoming a U.S. citizen in 1943, Dr. Kissinger served in the 84th Army Division and was awarded the Bronze Star for his meritorious service during World War II. He later served in the Counter Intelligence Corps in occupied Germany before joining the U.S. Army Reserves until 1959.
A distinguished academic, Dr. Kissinger obtained his bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees from Harvard University, where he taught international relations for nearly two decades. In 1969, he was appointed National Security Advisor by President Nixon and went on to serve as Secretary of State under both Presidents Nixon and Ford. During his tenure, Dr. Kissinger played key roles in historic events such as the opening to China, resolving the Yom Kippur War in the Middle East, and ending America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. He also worked towards establishing representative government in Rhodesia and negotiated significant arms control agreements with the Soviet Union.
Not only was Dr. Kissinger a respected statesman, but he also authored 21 books on national security matters. A private family service will be held for his interment, followed by a memorial service in New York City at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Animal Medical Center Development Office in New York City or the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C.
