Mick Clifford: Pothead Pooches in the Park

The Citizens’ Assembly has struck a chord with the public by proposing a reconsideration of drug laws. The prevalence of illegal drug use, particularly cannabis, has undoubtedly contributed to this sentiment. In recent times, the distinct aroma of marijuana seems to hang in the air, especially in urban areas. Gone are the telltale signs of potheads, as the subculture has infiltrated mainstream society.

This week, a peculiar incident unfolded in Dublin’s Johnstown Park, further exemplifying the changing landscape. Known for its playground, tennis courts, and football pitches, the park attracts people and their four-legged friends from all over. I, along with my lovable Labrador named Skellig, often seek refuge there.

Unbeknownst to us, Tuesday marked the beginning of a bizarre phenomenon – dogs getting stoned. Pet owners noticed their furry companions exhibiting signs of intoxication and promptly took them to the local vet, Michael John Winters of Fox’s clinic in Finglas village. Winters deduced that all the affected dogs had visited Johnstown Park earlier that day.

Within hours, the news spread like wildfire, prompting Michael John’s appearance on Liveline to shed light on the matter. He described the dogs’ loss of balance, easily-startled behavior, and impaired coordination, reminiscent of what one might observe in humans ambling through town centers on a Saturday night. Although he did not specifically identify the intoxicant responsible, speculation pointed towards marijuana. With cannabis consumption on the rise, it was only a matter of time before our furry friends caught on to the buzz.

One dog owner, Niall Connolly, joined Liveline to share his firsthand account. He had been walking his labradoodle, Enzo, in Johnstown Park and later noticed his pet in a bewildered trance. Seeking assistance, Connolly promptly sought veterinary help, leading to Enzo receiving intravenous treatment for eight hours to eliminate the intoxicating substance from his system. Fortunately, Enzo has since made a full recovery, much to his owner’s relief.

Curiosity propelled me to delve further into the matter. If these dogs were indeed getting high from someone else’s stash, there must be a stash to be found and monetized. Inspired by the exploits of the Young Offenders in West Cork, I embarked on a search within the park. Alas, my efforts were in vain, as it appeared the dogs had devoured the entire stockpile. However, I did manage to encounter a lone walker who confirmed the suspicions. According to her, one of the dogs had undergone a urine test, a procedure typically associated with young offenders or individuals apprehended while intoxicated behind the wheel.

By Friday, the park had returned to normal, and the incident was deemed a thing of the past. The dogs frolicked once more, although a few still seemed to bear a dreamy, unfocused gaze, hinting at their lingering effects. In line with a more progressive approach to drug policy, the police decided against pursuing an investigation. Moreover, anyone who had left a stash in the park, assuming they intended to retrieve it later, likely learned a valuable lesson. In a world where the scent of cannabis lingers on every breeze, our canine companions know just where to look for a good time.

As for Skellig, I couldn’t help but notice his somewhat forlorn expression. It was as if he had missed out on an experience that could have momentarily alleviated the monotony of his canine existence. This was reinforced later that evening when I played a selection of songs by the great JJ Cale on Spotify. Instantly, Skellig’s ears perked up, and he made a beeline for the door, his destination unknown.

In conclusion, the episode of the pothead pooches in Johnstown Park serves as a curious anecdote amidst the broader debate surrounding drug laws and societal perception. While dogs getting intoxicated may seem like an amusing story, it underscores the need for a comprehensive examination of drug policies to ensure the well-being of both humans and their furry companions.
