Dog Dies from Severe Tick Infestation: Mercedes Man Facing Animal Cruelty Charges
A 45-year-old man from Mercedes is now facing animal cruelty charges after his dog tragically succumbed to a severe tick infestation. Agapito Javier Alfaro was taken into custody on Wednesday following the disturbing discovery made by local authorities.
The incident began when a police officer responded to a welfare check concerning a canine at Alfaro’s residence on North Washington Avenue. Upon arrival, the officer found a white dog chained underneath the porch. While the dog had access to food and water, it appeared malnourished and was suffering from hair loss.
Due to the canine blocking the entrance, the officer was initially unable to contact Alfaro, the owner. In response to the concerning condition of the dog, two other officers returned to the residence later that day. They determined that the dog was in an extremely poor state of health. The animal had patches of fur missing from its body, trembling legs that made standing difficult, and was infested with ticks and other insects.
Additionally, the officers discovered that the dog was being restrained by a small metal chain used as both a collar and means of immobilization. They also found a minimal amount of food and water present in the vicinity.
Recognizing the dire situation, the dog was taken into custody by animal control after the officers were unable to reach the owner. Tragically, the canine’s condition rapidly deteriorated, and it succumbed to a tick-borne illness on September 5. An animal control officer revealed that the dog had been heavily infested with ticks along its spine and under the ear area, indicating a lack of proper tick care. The dog’s pale appearance suggested a low blood count, similar to anemia.
Alfaro was subsequently arrested on Wednesday, though he was released the following day on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond.
This distressing case highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need for proper care and attention towards animals in our communities.
