MALDEN, MASS. – The Animal Rescue League of Boston’s Law Enforcement Department is joining forces with Malden Police and Animal Control to investigate a distressing case of animal abandonment. The abandoned dog, a 2-year-old Mastiff now named Big Momma, was discovered tied to a pole in Trafton Park on a cold and wet night in mid-December 2023. Thanks to the intervention of a Good Samaritan, the scared and hungry dog was brought to the attention of the Malden Police Department.

Big Momma’s underbelly revealed a concerning issue—a massive 13-pound tumor. Acting swiftly, Malden Animal Control Officer Kevin Alkins ensured that the dog received immediate veterinary care at the Blue Pearl Vet Hospital in Charlestown. To everyone’s relief, the subsequent testing confirmed that the tumor was benign. Subsequently, Big Momma began her recovery journey under the care of Bill Bowdridge, the owner of Big Daddy Doggie Daycare in Malden.

The removal of the tumor and the spaying procedure amounted to approximately $5,000. While Bowdridge has already managed to raise half of the required funds, contributions towards the remaining balance can be made by contacting Blue Pearl’s finance department at 617-284-9777.

Animal neglect and abandonment are at the heart of this case, and ARL Law Enforcement, along with Malden Police, are appealing to the public for any relevant information regarding the origin of this dog. Individuals with information are urged to reach out to ARL Law Enforcement at (617) 426-9170 x110, or Malden Police at (781) 397-7171.

ARL takes note that dealing with a pet’s medical condition can be a daunting and expensive endeavor. However, the organization emphasizes that abandoning an animal is never a solution. When pets are left to fend for themselves, they face significant risks, including illness, injury, or even death.

Assistance and options are available to pet owners in need, and ARL encourages them to contact their local animal control or animal welfare organization to explore the available resources.

As this investigation unfolds, the hope is that justice will be served for Big Momma and that this heart-wrenching case will serve as a reminder to treat animals with compassion and care.
