DOE’s Cleanup to Clean Energy Initiative Repurposes Nuclear Sites for Renewable Power
President Joe Biden has unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at repurposing nuclear sites for renewable energy projects as part of his administration’s efforts to decarbonize the US power supply. The program, known as Cleanup to Clean Energy, will see about 70,000 acres of Department of Energy (DOE)-owned lands transformed into utility-scale clean energy projects. This move is expected to reduce pollution from traditional energy sources like fossil fuels while supporting the growth of the renewable energy sector.
The initiative includes five facilities, including the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) located in New Mexico. The WIPP site, situated in the desert region of southeast New Mexico, is expected to be best suited for generating solar power. New Mexico, ranked second in the US for solar energy potential, has recently adopted a statewide community solar program to expand access to solar power.
Mark Bollinger, the Manager of the DOE’s Carlsbad Field Office, expressed excitement about being included in the Cleanup to Clean Energy initiative. He highlighted the potential of the project to help achieve clean energy, climate, and sustainability goals at both the national and local levels. Bollinger also mentioned that efforts are underway to increase the number of electric vehicles in WIPP’s fleet as part of the broader goal to electrify operations at the site.
Before any final decisions are made, the DOE’s Carlsbad Field Office is committed to engaging with the local communities, the State of New Mexico, and nearby utility providers. These consultations will ensure compliance with federal and state regulations and guarantee that the project aligns with the original Land Withdrawal Act that established WIPP.
The Cleanup to Clean Energy initiative aligns with President Biden’s executive order calling for a transition to 100 percent non-carbon energy by 2030. The DOE plans to leverage areas previously used for nuclear security and environmental remediation to generate clean energy, contributing to global efforts to combat climate change and protect energy independence.
In addition to the Cleanup to Clean Energy initiative, the DOE announced a community solar pilot program aimed at connecting solar power resources to households using government assistance. New Mexico, along with several other states, will participate in this program, which is expected to result in significant electric bill savings for residents.
This latest move by the Biden administration underscores its commitment to renewable energy expansion and the creation of a clean energy future. By repurposing nuclear sites for renewable power, the US is taking a step closer to achieving its decarbonization goals while supporting local communities and building a sustainable energy infrastructure.
