Disney Villains: Maleficent #1 Introduces Reynard the Fox, an Abandoned Disney Movie Concept

Reynard the Fox, a long-lost Disney movie concept, has resurfaced in an unexpected way. The character, originally intended for an animated feature in the 1930s, has now made his way into the pages of Disney Villains: Maleficent #1. This deep-cut reference is a treat for hardcore Disney fans who are familiar with the abandoned idea for a movie that never materialized.

Written by Soo Lee, Disney Villains: Maleficent #1 introduces Reynard the Fox as a folkloric trickster figure who becomes part of Maleficent’s story. The comic gives Reynard a completely original background and story, finally revealing Disney’s take on the character after all these years. Although different from the original concept, Reynard is now officially part of the Disney canon.

In the comic, Reynard first appears as a human named Prince Reynaud. However, he lies to Maleficent, earning her wrath. As punishment, she transforms him into a devilish fox, drawing a connection between his deceitful behavior and the sly nature of the animal. Forced to rely on trickery to survive in his new form, Reynard embarks on a journey that showcases Maleficent’s penchant for harsh punishments and reinforces her reputation as a formidable Disney villain.

Reynard the Fox has a long history with Disney that dates back to the Middle Ages. Often portrayed as a streetwise prankster, Reynard’s cunning nature made him an appealing character for Disney to adapt. In the 1930s, the company embarked on developing a Reynard film during the Great Depression. However, Walt Disney had concerns about the character being seen as a crook, as it didn’t align with the family-friendly image Disney wanted to uphold.

Despite attempts to rework Reynard and make him more likable, the Disney film never came to fruition. Financial difficulties and Walt Disney’s passing ultimately spelled the end for the project. However, some of the ideas intended for the Reynard film found their way into the 1973 animated feature, Robin Hood.

With Reynard the Fox finally being introduced in Disney Villains: Maleficent #1, there is renewed hope that the character could eventually make it to the big screen. While there are no official plans for a film adaptation at the moment, this inclusion in the comic book is a significant step forward for Reynard.

Disney Villains: Maleficent #1, featuring Reynard the Fox, is now available from Dynamite Entertainment. Fans of Disney and obscure movie concepts alike can dive into this unique blend of the Sleeping Beauty lore and the world of Reynard the Fox.
