Quiet places amidst the bustling city of Taipei are not impossible to find, according to a recently published interactive map. The map, created by researchers from Academic Sinica and the Soundscape Association of Taiwan, identifies areas in Taipei with average noise levels below 55 decibels. The team of 25 volunteers collected noise measurements from 182 locations in parks, alleys, and neighborhoods during the months of May and June.

Out of the 182 locations, the study found that nearly half of them, 90 in total, had noise levels below the threshold of 55 decibels. This threshold is considered by the World Health Organization to be the point at which significant community annoyance can occur in outdoor settings. At a press conference unveiling the findings, Fan Chin-hui, the founder of the Soundscape Association, expressed the importance of the map in demonstrating that tranquility can be found even in a densely populated place like Taiwan.

Chan Ta-chien, a researcher at Academia Sinica, pointed out that while Taipei’s overall noise levels are comparable to those of major European cities, it lacks sufficient places for individuals to escape the constant tumult. Excessive noise can have long-term effects on human health, with Chan’s own research linking high noise levels during the night to increased blood pressure and blood sugar.

To address these health concerns, the United Nations recommends the use of natural barriers such as tree belts in urban areas to reduce road traffic noise. As an example, Chan highlighted the measurements taken around Daan Forest Park, where noise levels exceeded 55 decibels in several locations, except for the music pavilion in the park’s center, which had levels below 50 decibels.

The interactive map serves as a valuable resource for individuals seeking moments of serenity amidst the fast-paced city life in Taipei. It not only raises awareness about the impact of noise pollution on health but also provides a practical tool for identifying quiet areas to relax and unwind. As the project encourages the preservation of quiet spaces, it aligns with the vision of finding solace in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Taipei. By prioritizing the importance of tranquil environments, individuals can prioritize their well-being and mitigate the potential adverse effects of noise pollution on their health.
