A man in Ōtepoti/Dunedin has taken owning a pet to a whole new level. Richard Trainor has found a clever way to help his disabled pet duck get around. When Trainor realized his pet duck, named ‘Duckie Duckworth’, was disabled, he came up with a brilliant solution to ensure she could experience the joys of life. Trainor has modified a cat harness into a set of wheels for Duckie, allowing her to move around with ease. Despite the challenges, Trainor is committed to giving Duckie the best life possible. Duckie, who had a rough start to life after being rescued from the snow, has formed a strong bond with Trainor. Despite initial doubts, Trainor is dedicated to caring for Duckie and providing her with the love and attention she deserves.
Trainor’s efforts have paid off, as Duckie is not only surviving but thriving in her new situation. Every day, she enjoys a warm bath and feasts on a variety of food, including bird seeds, worms, slugs, silverbeet, and spinach. Additionally, Duckie has some welcoming company with three wild ducks who visit and eat alongside her. Trainor even reveals that Duckie has found a firm friendship with Twiggy, the dog.
Trainor’s story has gained recognition, as other people have reached out to him seeking advice and assistance with their own disabled ducks. He is delighted that Duckie has become a star and an inspiration to others.
Trainor’s dedication and creativity have transformed Duckie’s life, proving that with a little invention and a lot of love, any animal can thrive, regardless of their disabilities.
