Top Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar expressed her happiness after overcoming numerous hardships and successfully appearing for the trials of the upcoming Hangzhou Asian Games. After a 21-month suspension due to a doping violation, the Tripura gymnast made a comeback and emerged on top in the all-around event during the trials held at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. Dipa is known for her performance in the 2016 Rio Olympics where she narrowly missed out on a bronze medal. However, she is determined to give her best moving forward and hopes to surpass her previous achievements.
Reflecting on her recent performance, Dipa said, I think it was a big comeback for me. The performance was OK, though not 100 percent. But moving forward, I will do my best to give more than 100 percent. Despite being a part of the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games gymnastics contingent, she fell short of expectations and failed to qualify in her favorite event, vault. Additionally, she ended up in fifth place in the women’s balance beam and had to pull out of the women’s artistic gymnastics final due to a knee injury.
Over the years, Dipa has faced various challenges, including back and knee injuries and two surgeries. However, she remains hopeful and determined to focus on the future. Dipa expressed her gratitude to her coach Bishweshwar Nandi for training her diligently during the last two months. Despite her own success, she emphasized the importance of younger gymnasts training on all four apparatuses to qualify for the Olympics.
In order to qualify for the Olympic Games, Dipa believes that gymnasts should excel in all disciplines and not just focus on a single event. She wants the younger generation to understand the significance of being well-rounded in their skills. Dipa acknowledged the talent of other Indian gymnasts like Pranati Nayak and Aruna Reddy in the vault but stressed the importance of training on all four apparatuses for overall success.
