Venture-backed companies are turning to digital healthcare to help tackle the maternal-health crisis in the United States. Startups such as Pomelo Care, Maven Clinic and Babyscripts are using tools such as telehealth and apps to better manage pre-existing health conditions and help to prevent complications that can arise during pregnancy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists mental health, heart conditions and hypertensive disorders as the major underlying causes of pregnancy-related deaths, which are four out of five of which are preventable. Beyond enhancing access to medical services, the use of digital tools can help to offset shortages of nurses and doctors, vastly improving the delivery of equitable maternal care.
