The Directorate General Border Roads (DGBR) of Jammu & Kashmir recently visited the Baltal and Chandanwari areas to inspect ongoing maintenance work on the Amarnath Yatra track. A statement released by the PRO (Defense) Srinagar informed that Lt. General Rajeev Chaudhry applauded the efforts of the workers employed under ‘Project Beacon’ for restoring the Yatra Track before its 2023 commencement.
Despite losing time due to bad weather conditions in April and May, Chaudhry guaranteed that they will complete the entire restoration work by June 15th, 2023. Furthermore, he assured that work will continue even after this year’s completion to foster better quality tracks for subsequent years. The BRO was handed over control of the Amarnath Yatra tracks in September 2022 for further maintenance and upgradation.
The restoration work will comprise snow clearance, refurbishing of all footbridges, expanding the track, reconstructing breast and retaining walls, and fortifying the track’s protection at slide-prone stretches. Currently, the BRO has eight dozers, excavators, and nearly 1100 workers striving hard to complete the task on time.
The weather conditions in the higher reaches of Kashmir during April and May have adversely impacted the work’s progress. However, the BRO is pursuing every possible endeavor to crack the deadline of 15th June. The Amarnath Yatra 2023 is scheduled to start on July 1st this year.
