India’s worst rail accident in over a decade occurred on June 2, with at least 233 people killed and 900 more injured after two passenger trains collided in the Balasore district of Odisha. The Howrah Superfast Express travelling from Bangalore to Howrah, West Bengal collided with the Coromandel Express which was running from Kolkata to Chennai. Rescue workers, supported by sniffer dogs, police officers, and firefighters, continue to excavate the mangled wreckage and the National Disaster Response Force has been deployed to the site as the death toll is feared to rise. Reports suggest that train compartments were torn open, and carriages were flipped over. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences, while conflicting reports about the cause of the accident continue to be resolved. The tragedy has renewed scrutiny of the Indian railway system’s safety record due to ageing infrastructure, although safety has improved significantly in recent years due to technological investments.
