Desperate East Kilbride Nurse Seeks £30K Cure for Stage 4 Cancer
Jacquie Baird, a well-known nurse from East Kilbride, is desperately seeking a cure for her stage 4 cancer. Her family has launched a fundraising campaign to raise £30,000 in the hopes of finding a potential treatment that could prolong Jacquie’s life.
Jacquie, 62 years old and a mother and grandmother of four, was diagnosed with lobular breast cancer during the Covid lockdown. She underwent grueling chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and a mastectomy, and initially believed that the cancer was gone. However, in June, she began experiencing excruciating back pain and was given the devastating news that her cancer had returned and spread to her spine’s bone marrow.
Unfortunately, Jacquie was informed that her cancer was now terminal and that no further treatment options were available through the NHS. However, her family has managed to find an alternative treatment abroad that could potentially save her life. The treatment, known as dendritic cell therapy, has a claimed success rate of 70% in stage 4 cancer patients.
Dendritic cell therapy involves creating a vaccine specific to the patient’s cancer by taking their blood and injecting it to target and destroy the cancer cells. Although the treatment can be carried out in the UK, it comes with a hefty price tag of £40,000.
Jacquie’s daughter, Jennifer Rodger, an aesthetics nurse, is determined to help her mother fight the disease. Together with her siblings, Jennifer has launched a crowdfunding page with the goal of raising £30,000. The family is funding the remaining amount themselves.
In just four days, the fundraising page has already received an overwhelming response, with donations totaling almost £19,000. The family is grateful for the support they have received so far and hopes to reach their target soon so that Jacquie can start the potentially life-saving treatment.
Jacquie remains optimistic about the future, saying, Although this road only began in April 2021, it has seemed a long one. From feeling hopeless two weeks ago to now, I feel positive this treatment is going to be the start of a much longer life than expected.
Aside from being a dedicated nurse for 42 years, Jacquie has also made a significant impact on her community by helping others in need. She is the founder of the Shop for Nothing East Kilbride Facebook page, which has 10,000 members and has provided assistance to thousands of people over the years.
Jennifer describes her mother as an amazing woman who has dedicated her life to helping others. They are determined to ensure she has the best possible chance of fighting her cancer by exploring all available treatment options.
