Depression Doubles Dementia Risk in Adults: Study
A new study conducted by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Aarhus University in Denmark has found a strong link between depression and an increased risk of developing dementia later in life. The study, published in JAMA Neurology, followed 1.4 million Danish citizens over a period of nearly four decades to determine this association.
The results revealed that individuals who suffer from depression are more than twice as likely to receive a dementia diagnosis eventually. Interestingly, the risk is higher for men and exists regardless of the age at which the depression was diagnosed. Even those who were hospitalized for depression multiple times had a stronger likelihood of developing dementia later in life.
This study challenges the notion that depression diagnosed later in life is merely an early symptom of dementia. Instead, our findings suggest that a depression diagnosis at any point in adulthood increases the risk of dementia later on, explains Dr. Holly Elser, the first author of the study and a neurology resident at Penn.
The correlation between depression and dementia remained significant despite whether individuals were prescribed antidepressants within six months of their depression diagnosis. This indicates that the risk persists regardless of medication use.
While previous studies have also established a link between depression and dementia, this particular study stands out due to its large sample size and extensive follow-up period. These factors allowed researchers to provide a more precise estimate of the association between depression and dementia.
Although the exact reasons behind this link remain unclear, researchers speculate that chronic inflammation, stress, and vascular diseases may play a role.
