Department of Home Affairs Accused of Ignoring Sexual Harassment Claims at Alberton Office
The Department of Home Affairs is facing accusations of neglecting sexual harassment claims at its Alberton office, located on the East Rand. The Public Servants Association (PSA) has condemned the alleged failure of the department to address the issue, stating that they had received numerous complaints about harassment, sexual harassment, and victimization experienced by staff members on a daily basis.
The matter has drawn the attention of Home Affairs spokesperson, Siya Qoza, who confirmed that it is receiving the necessary attention. However, the PSA has gone a step further by reporting the incident to the minister’s office and calling for the immediate removal of the manager involved.
The manager in question, whose identity is known to The Citizen, has responded to the allegations by stating that the matter is still under investigation and that the appropriate processes should be followed. Surprisingly, he later deleted his response, raising further questions about accountability.
A staff member at the Alberton office, who requested anonymity due to concerns for their safety, revealed that they have been dealing with this ongoing issue for over a decade. According to the staff member, there have been multiple cases and complaints filed against the manager since 2012.
The staff member also shared their frustration with higher-level management, claiming that district managers and the provincial manager dismissed the matter by suggesting that it was part of the manager’s personality or cultural background. They alleged that promises to investigate were made but never fulfilled.
The manager’s alleged abuse of power was also emphasized, with the staff member stating that he frequently reminded them of his authority and threatened to make their lives difficult.
The PSA’s involvement in the case came about because the staff members felt that the department had not taken appropriate action, despite their efforts to report the incidents over the years. Seeking outside assistance seemed to be their only hope for achieving justice and putting an end to the harassment they have endured.
It is disheartening to see claims of sexual harassment being ignored within a government department, as those in positions of power should be held to the highest standards of accountability. The affected staff members, who have bravely stepped forward to share their experiences, deserve a workplace free from fear and harassment.
As the investigation continues, it is essential for the Department of Home Affairs to address these allegations promptly and transparently. The well-being and safety of their employees should always be a priority. A thorough examination of the claims, followed by appropriate disciplinary action, will send a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated within the department.
All eyes are now on the department’s response to these serious allegations. The hope is that they will take the necessary steps to rectify the situation, provide justice for the victims, and establish a safe and inclusive working environment for their employees.
