Greetings from Riyadh as we draw ever closer to what may be the biggest boxing event in recent memory. The ‘Day of Reckoning’ card is set to feature an impressive lineup of champions and top contenders, all gathering in one place, ready to step into the ring.
For the fighters, it’s a case of winner takes all, as success on Saturday could propel them to further glory in future events, solidifying Riyadh’s position as the premier destination for blockbuster fights.
Last week, I covered four of the fights on this card, and now I’ll provide my insights on the remaining matchups. Let’s start with Deontay Wilder, my co-driver, who aims to establish himself firmly back in the heavyweight picture with his fight against Joseph Parker.
It’s safe to say that the heavyweight division is a more exciting place with Deontay in it. His third fight against Tyson Fury showcased his heart and determination, and in my opinion, it was one of the best heavyweight battles in history.
Having had the chance to shoot a promotional video with him, I can confidently say that he’s a better boxer than a driver. To put it lightly, my face during the ride was not entirely due to the makeup department’s work.
It’s no secret that fans are eager to see Deontay face Anthony Joshua. However, both fighters have tough challenges ahead of them before a potential showdown. Joseph is brimming with confidence and has grown as a fighter since his time as the WBO world champion. With experience behind him and a strong team, including Tyson, advising him on countering Deontay’s threat, Joseph could give the Bronze Bomber a real run for his money.
One fight flying under the radar is the matchup between Arslanbek Makhmudov and Agit Kabayel. Both fighters are undefeated and looking to break into the elite ranks of heavyweight contenders. Makhmudov, an imposing figure who could easily play a Bond film villain, is a force to be reckoned with and highly regarded by Top Rank. Kabayel, the European champion, sees this fight as his chance to make a breakthrough after years of knocking on the door.
Filip Hrgovic has his sights set on world titles, and his upcoming fight against Mark Di Mori is a stepping stone towards his IBF challenge next year. Holding the No.1 mandatory spot, Hrgovic cannot afford to slip up against the Australian. The Croatian fighter, known as El Animal, needs the activity to prepare him for the big opportunity coming his way in 2024.
Another fighter seizing an opportunity of a lifetime is Ellis Zorro, who will face Ring Magazine cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia. Although the IBF belt held by Opetaia had to be forfeited, he wasn’t willing to miss the chance to perform on this global stage and be part of what Riyadh is building. Many may not give Ellis a chance against the Sydney man, but they likely didn’t believe Opetaia could overcome Mairis Briedis either. Undefeated in both his amateur and professional career, Ellis is backing himself and ready to give his all in a fight that could change his life.
