Dense Fog Blankets Delhi, Punjab, And Uttar Pradesh; Amritsar Records Zero Visibility
New Delhi: Widespread dense fog enveloped the national capital and other regions in the Northwestern part of the country, resulting in significantly reduced visibility. Satellite imagery released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) revealed a dense to very dense layer of fog covering Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, North Rajasthan, and North Madhya Pradesh.
Amritsar, in particular, experienced zero visibility at 5:30 am on Wednesday. Uttar Pradesh’s cities also saw a major dip in visibility, with Lucknow and Prayagraj recording 25 meters, Varanasi recording 50 meters, and Gwalior recording 200 meters. Delhi Safdarjung reported 50 meters of visibility.
The dense fog has caused disruptions in daily activities, including transportation. Morning flights have been delayed or canceled, and roads have become hazardous for commuters.
The visibility is extremely poor due to the dense fog, and it is affecting flight operations as well as road travel, said an official from the India Meteorological Department.
Weather experts have advised people to exercise caution while venturing out and use fog lights while driving. They have also suggested the use of warm clothing to protect against the cold and damp conditions accompanying the fog.
Meanwhile, the southern regions of the country are predicted to receive light to moderate rainfall, providing relief from the foggy conditions. The India Meteorological Department has issued a weather bulletin forecasting five days of precipitation in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mahe, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Lakshadweep.
However, the matter of concern currently is the upcoming Western Disturbance. This disturbance is expected to bring wet weather to Northwestern and adjoining Central India from December 30 to January 2, 2024. The IMD advises residents of these areas to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins and take necessary precautions.
With visibility greatly affected and unpredictable weather conditions prevalent, it is essential for residents to stay informed about the situation and plan their activities accordingly.
