Demands for Transparency in JU’s Internal Inquiry & Action Against Illegal Occupants Raise Tensions
The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JU) in New Delhi is facing increased tensions as demands for transparency in the internal inquiry process and actions against illegal occupants of hostels escalate. The demands have been made by the Arts Faculty Students Union (AFSU), the arts wing of the Student Federation of India (SFI) at JU.
In response to the incident that occurred on August 9, where a 17-year-old undergraduate student tragically fell to his death from a second-floor balcony of the main boys’ hostel, the AFSU spokesperson has called for the report of the internal inquiry committee to be submitted within 48 hours. The union emphasizes the importance of making the findings known to all stakeholders, ensuring transparency in the investigation.
Furthermore, the AFSU spokesperson urges the university to take action against illegal occupants who have overstayed their welcome in the hostels, despite having already passed the necessary requirements. The union insists that a public announcement should be made identifying these individuals, preventing them from remaining in the hostels any longer.
Another demand put forward by the AFSU is regarding the installation of CCTV cameras on the campus and hostels. The union believes that any decision in this matter should only be made after consulting with all stakeholders, including the students. This highlights the importance of involving all parties in discussions that directly affect them.
Addressing the issue of alleged consumption of narcotics and alcohol on the campus at night, the AFSU spokesperson firmly states that they do not support such behavior under the guise of students’ activities. They emphasize the need to distance themselves from negative perceptions and oppose the spreading of negative views about the university.
To express their concerns about alleged ragging and what they perceive as attempts to restrict the liberal democratic space at JU by right-wing forces, the AFSU has planned a citizens rally on August 23 from Golpark to 8B bus stand. This rally aims to shed light on the issues at hand and create awareness.
The tragic incident that occurred at JU has raised serious questions and concerns among the student community. Through their demands for transparency in the internal inquiry process and actions against illegal occupants, the AFSU aims to ensure that justice is served and the truth is revealed.
The university administration now faces the challenging task of addressing these demands and finding a resolution that takes into account the perspectives of all stakeholders. It is crucial for the institution to maintain a balanced approach that upholds transparency while respecting the rights and concerns of the students. Only through open dialogue and constructive engagement can a resolution be achieved that restores trust and harmony within the university community.
