A Brazilian delivery driver has been hailed as a hero after intervening in a knife attack in Dublin. The incident occurred outside an Irish school and left a five-year-old girl with serious injuries. The attack sparked a night of riots in the capital, making it the worst such unrest in almost twenty years.
Caio Benicio, who works for the Deliveroo takeaway app, used his motorcycle helmet to subdue the suspect as he allegedly stabbed three children and a woman. Benicio, who himself has two children, downplayed his actions, saying he simply acted as any parent would.
Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar commended Benicio and others who intervened, calling them the real Irish heroes. However, the modest delivery driver doesn’t consider himself a hero. When asked about his actions, Benicio said, I’m a parent. I have two kids myself. I think every parent would do the same.
Following the attack, Benicio returned to the scene where he was greeted by numerous people who hailed him as a brave individual. The local response, along with a phone call from his children, meant the world to him. Benicio expressed how nice it was to make his children proud.
During the incident, Benicio received assistance from a trainee chef from France who had been in Dublin on an internship. The 17-year-old sustained minor injuries to his hand and face. French President Emmanuel Macron personally called the teenager to congratulate him on his courage.
Regarding the subsequent riots in Dublin, which involved around 500 individuals, authorities believe that they were incited by far-right agitators. However, Benicio found it incomprehensible that the protest was against immigrants when he himself is an immigrant and was the one who stepped in to help. He expressed his belief that the rioters were a small group of people who didn’t understand what they were fighting for.
