Delhi Police Denies Permission for Solidarity Meeting on Manipur Violence
The Delhi Police has refused to grant permission to a civil society organization to hold a solidarity meeting regarding the recent ethnic violence in Manipur. Citing concerns about the law and order situation, the police denied the Conference For Human Rights (India) the opportunity to organize the event in southeast Delhi’s C R Park.
In an official communication addressed to the Conference For Human Rights (India) Secretary General, Nanita Sharma, the police stated, Permission to hold the solidarity meeting at Market no. 2 is not granted considering the law and order situation. This decision comes in light of the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, which began on May 3 when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized in protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
The tragic events surrounding the ethnic violence in Manipur have claimed the lives of over 160 individuals, with several others being injured.
