The Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) has expressed shock at the sudden termination of popular news channel Media Star World by YouTube. Without any prior warning, the channel, headed by veteran journalist Mohammad Ahmad Kazmi, was pulled off the platform. With 820 thousand subscribers and nearly 4.9 thousand videos, Media Star World provided world news and views, with a specific focus on West Asia affairs. Its broadcasts in Hindustani catered to the average viewer. The channel’s viewership skyrocketed during the current Gaza crisis as it aimed to offer balanced coverage of the war-torn region.
M.A. Kazmi stated that YouTube did not send any notification regarding the termination of the channel. The Delhi Union of Journalists believes that this abrupt action may be a political move, potentially influenced by external pressure. They have appealed to YouTube to reinstate Media Star World and allow it to resume its coverage.
In its statement, the DUJ emphasized that small channels like Media Star World require years of persistent coverage to establish viewership and reputation, and such efforts should not be dismantled in one fell swoop. The DUJ called for transparency from YouTube, urging the platform to publicly disclose the complete reasons behind its decision. Arbitrarily shutting down a channel undermines both democracy and free speech.
The statement was issued by Sujata Madhok, President of DUJ, along with Vice President SK Pande and General Secretary AM Jigneesh.
The termination of Media Star World has sparked concerns about the potential politicization of online platforms and the impact on journalistic freedom. The DUJ’s call to reinstate the channel highlights the need for transparency and accountability in such matters, safeguarding the principles of democracy and free expression.
