Two officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) have been sentenced to jail for contempt after failing to follow orders from the Delhi High Court and the National Green Tribunal (NGT) regarding the protection of trees. The contempt plea was filed by the New Delhi Nature Society against the Engineer-in-Chief and the Executive Engineer. They were both convicted of contempt last year in the same case. The court found that the officials had breached the court’s orders and their reluctance to uphold the law must result in punishment. The court ordered that the two officials serve four months and two months simple imprisonment, respectively, along with a fine of Rs 2,000 each. The court added that the officials must present themselves before the Registrar General after the ten-week period to be sent to judicial custody. The BSES Rajdhani had damaged the roots of several trees with the installation of cable and pipeline lines along Bipin Chandra Marg, violating the orders passed by the high court and the green panel.
