The High Court in Delhi has issued a circular directing all district courts in the city to allow parties and their lawyers to appear in court proceedings virtually via hybrid or video-conferencing without a prior request. This move is expected to further reduce physical attendance in courts and make legal processes more accessible. However, the circular also states that certain cases, such as those involving matrimonial disputes, sexual offences, and child custody, should only be digitally accessible to parties and lawyers. Medical termination of pregnancy cases, in-camera proceedings, and cases that may provoke enmity amongst communities that could disrupt law and order are among the other restrictions mentioned in the circular. The court may also direct parties and lawyers to appear physically under certain circumstances. The circular has been welcomed as a positive move to modernize the legal system and make it more efficient.
