The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Delhi Police on Sharjeel Imam’s plea to quash the chargesheet against him for a speech he gave at Jamia Milia Islamia on December 13, 2019. Imam has challenged the first supplementary chargesheet and claims that he is being prosecuted for the same speech. He has sought to quash the charges filed against him. The Judge has also requested a status report from Delhi Police, and the matter will be heard further on October 18, 2023. Special public prosecutor Amit Prasad accepted notice for Delhi Police while Imam was represented by advocates Ahmad Ibrahim, Talib Mustafa, and Ayesha Zaidi. The petition argues that multiple charges cannot be laid against one person for one speech. The counsel also argued that in the charge sheet filed under sedition and promoting enmity, no sanction for prosecution has been taken by the Police. The investigation of the case has been given to the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police.
