Delhi Government Commences 15-Day Evaluation to Implement ‘Mohalla Buses’ on City Roads

The Delhi government has started a 15-day assessment drive to identify the need for introducing small-size electric mohalla buses across the city and to determine their routes. 23 technical teams will conduct the study in different areas of the city. The transport department has plans to procure over 2,000 feeder buses that will operate on routes not accessible by 12-metre buses. Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said that this move will enhance the first and last-mile connectivity for bus users. These 9-metre electric buses are designed to cater to areas where road width is limited or where overcrowding prevents regular 12-metre buses from operating. The assessment process will also evaluate the demand for last-mile connectivity in each area and study the preferences of residents regarding transportation modes for such connectivity. The data collected during this exercise will determine the origin and destination of the proposed mohalla bus services in each locality. By introducing mohalla buses and analysing ground-level data, Delhi aims to provide greater convenience, accessibility, and sustainability for citizens travelling within the city.
