The Delhi government has announced plans to create over half a million job opportunities by redeveloping non-conforming industrial areas. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal aims to transform all 26 non-conforming industrial areas into recognized conforming industrial areas. Kejriwal explained that the redevelopment is important for Delhi’s industrial growth and progress. Once the redevelopment is complete, these areas will be accorded the coveted Conforming Area status, providing a conducive environment for businesses to thrive. The Delhi Government will be shouldering 90% of the costs, with only 10% of the expenses being borne by the industries.
The Department of Industries explained that the demarcation of land for residential, commercial, and industrial use is the responsibility of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). However, the DDA could not keep up with the pace of development resulting in unauthorized colonies emerging due to the unavailability of residential colonies in Delhi. The land use in Delhi started to deviate for other purposes. Industrial clusters were not created in a timely manner by the DDA, leading to the emergence of illegal or non-conforming industrial areas.
With over 70% of the land being used for industrial activities, the Delhi Government is committed to revitalizing Delhi’s industrial landscape, fostering economic growth, and generating employment opportunities. The project to redevelop non-conforming industrial areas will make a significant contribution to this cause by cultivating an ideal environment for businesses to grow. If the plan is successful, it would lead to the creation of over 600,000 new job opportunities for Delhi residents, providing significant benefits for the city’s economy. The Delhi government’s move has been widely praised by industry experts as a step in the right direction, allowing businesses to thrive while at the same time generating more employment opportunities.
