Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chief Swati Maliwal conducted inspections of bus stops in Delhi to address women’s safety concerns. During her visit, Maliwal discovered that the Ramesh Park and Lalita Park bus stops lacked proper lighting, leaving them dimly lit and unsafe for women.
Maliwal stated, We had received numerous complaints about the absence of lights at various bus shelters in Delhi. During our inspection, we found that both the Ramesh Park and Lalita Park bus stops were very dark. She further added that even at bus stops where lights were installed, they were non-functional, while some locations lacked lights altogether.
Concerns about the lack of lighting and resulting insecurity were voiced by women in the area. Maliwal emphasized the need for immediate action, stating, If the situation continues like this, how will women and children be safe? We are issuing a notice to the Delhi government to make changes and ensure that bus stops have adequate lighting.
In addition to addressing lighting issues, Maliwal highlighted the importance of implementing various measures to enhance women’s safety. She urged both the central and state governments to establish a system that ensures accountability for those who harass women. Maliwal suggested providing resources to the police system, setting up fast-track courts, and updating forensic science laboratories.
By taking these steps, attention can be brought to the urgent need for improved safety measures for women in Delhi. The DCW chief’s efforts aim to create an environment where women can commute without fear and where those who seek to harm them are held accountable.
