Delhi Airport’s Fourth Runway to Initially Serve Departures Only

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is set to unveil its new fourth runway on July 13, which will initially be dedicated solely to departures. The runway will be known as ‘Runway 29 Right and 11 Left’ (29R / 11L), solidifying Delhi Airport’s position as the only airport in India with four operational runways.

To facilitate the successful operation of the new runway, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will provide trained Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) manpower. According to a senior Delhi ATC official, the AAI is fully prepared to assume the role of Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) and ensure seamless operations on the fourth runway.

Presently, Delhi Airport operates a three-runway system consisting of a northerly runway, southerly runway, and runway designated as 27-28 north and 29 south. The introduction of the fourth runway, 29R, will increase the aircraft movement capacity at the airport to over 100 flights per hour, as per Delhi ATC data.

Due to the surge in flight movement during peak hours and the recent suspension of GoFirst operations, the overall number of flights has declined. Nevertheless, the commissioning of the fourth runway is expected to significantly increase flight movement and subsequently boost airport capacity.

Once operational, the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) plans to temporarily close the other two runways, including the main runway, to conduct necessary maintenance work.

The introduction of the fourth runway marks a significant milestone for Delhi Airport, aligning it with international airports that boast a similar number of runways. However, it’s important to note that the runway will initially be used exclusively for departures and will not be available for landing operations.

This development showcases Delhi Airport’s commitment to enhancing its infrastructure and service offerings, providing passengers with a more efficient and seamless travel experience. With increased flight movement capacity, the fourth runway will contribute to overall smoother operations, benefiting both domestic and international travelers alike.

In conclusion, the imminent launch of Delhi Airport’s fourth runway is set to reshape air operations while elevating the airport’s stature within India’s aviation landscape. As the aviation industry continues to rebound, this strategic expansion will position Delhi Airport as a vital hub for connectivity while offering unparalleled convenience to passengers.
