The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has yet to relay a road in Mylapore a week after milling it, much to the inconvenience of pedestrians and motorists alike. Civic activist R Ramesh raised the issue on Twitter, stating that despite complaints to the GCC and the local MLA online, Thatchi Arunachalam Street in Mylapore remains unrepaired. The GCC has apparently fined eight contractors for failing to relay roads within five days of milling them. However, some contractors say they are struggling to procure enough bitumen to carry out repairs on time.
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is responsible for the upkeep of the city’s roads, among other civic amenities. It is headed by the Mayor of Chennai, who is elected by the City Council.
R Ramesh is a civic activist who has frequently campaigned on municipal issues. He has also previously appeared in media coverage of problems with Chennai’s public transport infrastructure.
