Defence Secretary Supports Sentiment of Column Criticizing Police Handling of Pro-Palestinian Protests

Grant Shapps, the Secretary of State for Transport, has expressed support for the sentiment expressed in a controversial column written by Suella Braverman, the Home Secretary. The column, which has been blamed for emboldening far-right activists, criticized the Metropolitan Police’s handling of pro-Palestinian protests on Armistice Day.

During a BBC interview, Shapps acknowledged that while he did not agree with Braverman’s specific choice of words, he understood and agreed with the sentiment behind her remarks. He emphasized the importance of addressing individuals who breach the law during protests, especially those carrying banners with swastikas and promoting antisemitic tropes.

While distancing himself from Braverman’s wording, Shapps echoed the sentiment expressed in her column by stating that action should be taken to prosecute individuals who engage in illegal activities or promote prescribed organizations such as Hamas. He stressed that allowing such behavior without consequences is unacceptable.

The Metropolitan Police has acknowledged that the debate surrounding Braverman’s column contributed to increased tensions within the community. The police condemned the extreme violence exhibited by far-right counter-protesters at the Cenotaph war memorial. A large crowd bearing St. George flags engaged in skirmishes with the police, leading to clashes.

Braverman faces accusations of breaking the ministerial code by not obtaining approval from Number 10 for her column. In addition to criticizing the police, her column compared the pro-Palestinian protests to the Troubles in Northern Ireland and asserted a connection between the organizers and terrorist groups.

Shapps reiterated the importance of swift police action against individuals who break the law during protests. He acknowledged concerns that delayed action may lead some to believe they can continue carrying offensive banners, chanting hateful slogans, and violating laws aimed at preventing racial hatred. However, he expressed recognition of the challenges faced by the police in carrying out their duties.

When asked about Braverman’s future in her role, Shapps replied, a week’s a long time in politics. He declined to predict any outcomes but emphasized the unpredictable nature of political decisions.

First Minister of Scotland Humza Yousaf called for Braverman’s resignation, accusing her of emboldening far-right protesters. Chancellor Rishi Sunak condemned the actions of far-right groups and Hamas sympathizers as wholly unacceptable. In the face of mounting pressure from Tory MPs, Sunak faces calls to dismiss Braverman from her position.

In conclusion, Grant Shapps has voiced support for the sentiment expressed in Suella Braverman’s column despite distancing himself from her choice of words. He emphasized the necessity to take action against lawbreakers during protests and ensure their prosecution. The Metropolitan Police acknowledged an increase in tensions within the community following the publication of Braverman’s column. Her future in her role remains uncertain, with calls for her resignation and dismissal coming from various political figures.
