At least seven people have tragically lost their lives in a devastating fire that broke out at the Teatre nightclub in the Atalayas area of Murcia, Spain. The incident occurred on Sunday morning, leaving the city in shock and mourning.
Firefighters swiftly responded to the scene shortly after 6 am and battled the fierce blaze, bringing it under control. Once the flames were extinguished, their priority shifted to searching for the victims. So far, seven individuals have been confirmed deceased, with four others sustaining injuries from smoke inhalation. Two women aged 22 and 25, along with two men aged 41 and 45, were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Emergency medical services, including specialized units, were also present at the scene to care for the injured. Numerous revelers were treated for minor burns and smoke inhalation, with at least two requiring hospitalization. Disturbingly, there are reports of eight people still missing since the fire started, leaving their loved ones anxiously awaiting news of their fate.
Throughout Sunday morning, a team of 40 firefighters and 12 fire vehicles remained on-site to secure the area and continue the search. Meanwhile, the Murcia Police Headquarters launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on determining the fire’s origin. Members of the Homicide Group have also joined the investigation, underscoring the seriousness of the incident.
Preliminary reports suggest that a potential short circuit in the nightclub lighting system could have ignited the flames. Witnesses recount how the fire rapidly spread, causing partial roof collapse, ultimately resulting in a complete collapse an hour after the firefighters arrived. Sadly, the victims found themselves trapped on the upper floor, unable to escape the sudden and intense inferno. Some of the bodies recovered were unrecognizable due to the severity of the fire.
In response to the tragedy, the Murcia City Council has set up a support area in the Palacio de los Deportes for affected families and individuals. Psychological assistance and specialized units have been made available to provide help to those deeply impacted by the incident, particularly for the more severe cases.
Local authorities have imposed road closures in the vicinity of the fire, with Murcia Local Police diligently managing traffic to ensure public safety.
Murcia’s mayor, José Ballesta, visited the site of the fire and declared a three-day official mourning period for the victims. The General Director of Security and Emergencies, Ricardo Villalba, is working closely with the Murcia City Council to coordinate the necessary resources and response to manage this tragic event.
